Trail Description
East Wadi Qanat is located on the eastern side of Madinah, close to Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport. This section of the wadi forms part of the larger Wadi Qanat system, which runs across the city and plays an important role in its natural drainage network.
Like most wadis in the Madinah region, East Wadi Qanat is sometimes dry. However, during seasonal rainfall, water flows through the valley, following its natural course toward lower areas of the city. This makes the wadi an important natural channel for rainwater and flood control.
It is a bastion of wildlife, and a great location for birdwatching.

Historical & Cultural Significance
Historically, Wadi Qanat was essential to life in Madinah. It carried rainwater that helped nourish nearby agricultural lands and palm groves, supporting settlements around the city for generations.
Today, East Wadi Qanat is in the process of being transformed into a modern walking and recreation area as part of Madinah’s environmental and urban development initiatives. The project focuses on improving flood management, restoring the natural wadi environment, and providing safe outdoor spaces for residents and visitors.
As you walk, you’ll notice paved paths, open viewing areas, and newly planted greenery near the hiking trail entrance. You will also notice that much of the hiking area is still under construction, and the trail will extend much further in the upcoming months inshaAllah.

- This trail is being further developed to extend further down the wadi. Currently (as of January 26), it is a short trail that eventually dead-ends where the constructions teams are still working.
